When our oldest daughter was 9, she had her first seizure and was diagnosed with complex partial epilepsy. That was a hard blow. It’s ok, the doctors will give us answers and how to fix it – right? Nope. No rhyme or reason as to why a perfectly healthy 9-year-old would all of a sudden start having seizures. Their best way to fix it was to throw medicines at it and up the doses until it stops. Thanks doc, I could have thought of that.
So, after several types of seizure medications and multiple dosage increases (if she had a seizure, they went up by 25 mg until they stopped), they eventually got them fairly under control. So, although her seizures were at a minimum, the meds were causing some other issues and the Dr. prescribed some ADHD medicine because that apparently is a common side effect to seizure medicine.
Those meds changed our little girl. She was not the same. She was not outgoing, loud, talkative, – really just no emotions at all. She was about 13 at this time and a teenage girl should be all of those things at high levels, lol. On top of that, she had come to me a few times about how insecure she was because of having seizures and having to take the meds. It was crushing her self-esteem. I never realized that side of things and how emotional having any condition can be on someone. Taking a pill each day isn’t a big deal in my mind, but it can be devastating to a young adolescent. As a father, you just want to make it better and fix any problems your little girl is having, but there wasn’t much I could do. This was when I ventured into the CBD world. (story above) When she started using CBD, she almost instantly quit taking her ADHD medicine and her self-esteem went up a lot. Later, she completely weaned off her seizure meds and has been seizure free for over 3 years. Yes – the meds would save her from having seizures, but CBD saved her self-esteem. She is back to being the outgoing, too talkative, super emotional girl and I wouldn’t want her any other way.
