Delta-8 has a lower psychotropic potency than it’s close cousin Delta-9, while Delta-9 is the most abundant cannabis constituent in cannabis. Delta-8 is also known to connect with both CB1 and CB2 receptors in our bodies.

Delta-8 is synthesized from cannabigerolic acid (CBGA), the acidic form of CBG. Commonly called the “cannabis’ stem cell”, CBGA is responsible for producing a bunch of other cannabinoids such as THCA. THCA is then synthesized in mature cannabis from the stem cell molecule. Once harvested and exposed to heat, the THCA is decarboxylated, losing a co2 molecule and becoming Delta-9 THC – or just THC. That is then turned into Delta-8 by oxidation.

One drawback of Delta-8 is that it only exists naturally in very small quantities of less than 1 percent, making the only way to experience its effects is from refined concentrates, although many consider Delta-8 valuable due to it’s low potency. Researchers have looked into Delta-8, concluding that generally speaking Delta-8 THC produces similar psychoactive affects to Delta-9 THC but is around 50 to 75 percent less potent.

WHAT YOU SHOULD EXPECT

Delta-8 has been described as an easier, more tolerable version of traditional THC, producing semi-sedative affects without much mental stimulation. According to the US National Cancer Institute, Delta-8-THC can be defined as an analogue of THC with antiemetic, anxiolytic, appetite stimulating, analgesic, and neuroprotective properties.

Delta-8 THC chemically differs from Delta-9 THC by only a few atomic bonds and possesses many of the same beneficial qualities of Delta-9 THC, although Delta-8 is only around 25% as psychoactive as Delta-9 THC.

The 2018 Farm Bill specifically made all derivatives, isomers, and cannabinoids in hemp legal, provided the final product has less than 0.3% Delta 9 THC. For reference, Delta-8 THC is an isomer of CBD and a derivative of hemp and CBD. However, it is your responsibility to know your local and state laws

As a minor cannabinoid there’s still a lot about Delta-8 that we don’t know. You should always take a cautious approach when trying anything for the first time. If you’re thinking about consuming Delta-8-THC, you need to be aware of the information we currently have available. Make sure you talk to your doctor before trying Delta-8 and get a professional opinion for your health.
